The Communist Party of India-Marxist today elected Sitaram Yechury as its new general secretary.
On the final day of the 21st Congress in Visakhapatnam, the party choose Yechury as the replacement for Prakash Karat who served three terms.
S. Ramachandran Pillai's name was also doing the rounds but he pulled out of the race.
The party has always elected its leader unanimously.
The new 16-member politburo of the CPI(M) will have four new members: Hannan Mollah, Mohd Salim, Subhashini Ali & G Ramakrishnan. CPI(M)'s new central committee has 91 members apart from five special invitees and five permanent invitees.
