Welcoming Trinamool Congress government's stand against eviction of hawkers from railway stations in West Bengal, CPI-M legislature party leader Sujan Chakraborty on Monday also opposed the eviction move and demanded licence and rehabilitation for them.

"I have written a letter to the Chief Minister (Mamata Banerjee) welcoming state government's stand against the eviction of hawkers from the railway stations. We have been seeing that hawkers are beaten up, fined and taken to jail. Recently the railway officials have been trying to evict them.

"In order to solve the problems, licence and rehabilitation are to be given to them. With proper planning and keeping the safety of passengers intact, these arrangements can be done," he said.

The development comes two days after violence broke out at Baruipur railway station in South 24 Parganas district when Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel tried to evict hawkers who had "illegally" set up shops at the station premises.
