A two-day census of cranes and vultures began in Uttar Pradesh Tuesday, officials said.
The procedure, forest officials said, is being carried out in two shifts - early morning and in the evening between 5 to 7.30 p.m.
The census is being conducted in all wetlands in the 74 districts and the counting will be completed Dec 4.
A detailed headcount with region specific reports would then be sent to the state headquarter of the forest department Dec 5, an official informed.
Digital photographs of the birds would be clicked and global positioning system (GPS) readings would also be taken on the spot.
