Croatian police late Wednesday said that they used pepper spray to calm down refugees in Opatova, eastern Croatia.

Jelena Bikic, police spokeswoman, said the refugees pushed each other when they were boarding a bus in the reception centre in Opatova, near the border with Serbia, Xinhua news agency reported.

In order to protect children from "a human stampede", police used pepper spray. Two kids were sprayed accidentally, she added.

The kids were sent to the hospital by Red Cross.

A total of 44,000 refugees entered Croatia during the previous week, the Croatian interior ministry said on Wednesday.
