The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research is planning more innovation complexes at some strategic locations, Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh said Wednesday.

Innovation complexes are centres where young scientists focus on one particular area and translate indigenous research into products and technology with commercial potential.

Three such complexes are being built in Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai. The CSIR has further plans to set up innovation complexes at some strategic location. The progress depends upon availability of requisite funds, Jitendra Singh said in a written reply in Lok Sabha.

The CSIR, a premier national R&D organisation, is among the world's largest publicly funded R&D bodies.

In the 2014-2015 budget government allocated Rs.6,300 lakh for the innovation complexes.

According to the minister, the innovation complexes will take up translational research and will partner with industry, academia and research and development institutions in the region of their operation and catalyze innovation eco-system.
