Cuba has decided to send over 450 doctors to West Africa to help fight the Ebola epidemic.

The first batch of 165 healthcare workers - 62 doctors and 103 nurses - will arrive in Sierra Leone in early October, Xinhua reported.

The second batch of 296 doctors and nurses will head to Liberia and Guinea later on.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has thanked Cuba for its medical assistance in fighting the Ebola crisis.

According to the World Health Organisation, the Ebola virus has killed at least 2,500 people in West Africa and nearly twice as many have been infected since an outbreak in March.
