A CBI special court here Friday sentenced a customs official to two years in jail in a disproportionate assets case and also ordered attachment of his properties and fined him Rs.20,000.
The special court sentenced B. Pugazhenthi, superintendent of customs, to two years' rigorous imprisonment, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said in a statement.
According to the CBI, Pugazhenthi committed criminal misconduct by misusing his official position and acquired assets disproportionate to his known source of income.
The CBI said Pugazhenthi had acquired movable and immovable assets worth Rs.89,72,956 between Jan 1, 2004 and Nov 30, 2009 in his and his family members' names.
The corrupt official had also incurred an expenditure of Rs.45,80,974 while his total income for the period under review was Rs.70,91,059.
"The disproportionate assets held by him against his known sources of income was calculated to Rs.64,62,871 for which he could not explain satisfactorily," the CBI said.
