Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on Monday condoled the death of Holocaust survivor and Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel.

In a letter to his wife Marion Wiesel, the Dalai Lama wrote: "Among his many qualities he was a steady friend of the Tibetan people."

"Wiesel and I worked together with other Nobel Peace laureates in an effort to promote understanding between conflicting parties and to bring about a more peaceful world through dialogue and reconciliation," he said.

"We will miss his compassionate, broadminded contribution to our discussions," the Dalai Lama added.

Elie Wiesel, a World War II death camp survivor who won a Nobel Peace Prize for becoming the voice of millions of Holocaust victims, died in New York on Saturday. He was 87.
