A day before Home Minister Rajnath Singh's visit, curfew was relaxed on Tuesday in parts of Srinagar from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. for the first time since July 9.

And although restrictions continued in Old City areas, people going around in twos or threes were not stopped. Some vehicles were also seen on the roads, witnesses and residents said.

The 11-hour curfew relaxation took place in Civil Lines and other uptown areas of Srinagar, an official said.

Shops and business establishments, however, remained closed across the city as the separatist outfits have asked people to continue the shutdown till August 25.

Authorities also continued with their restrictions in many parts of the troubled Kashmir Valley where life remained paralysed for the 46th day in succession on Tuesday.

Rajnath Singh is expected to visit the Kashmir Valley on Wednesday to review the situation in the region where unending protests since the July 8 killing of a militant has led to 68 deaths.

The death toll includes 66 civilians and two policemen.
