A 13-year-old boy drowned in the swimming pool of a government school where he had gone to learn swimming, police said on Saturday.

The incident occurred around 6 p.m. on Friday in east Delhi's Farash Bazar at the Delhi government-run Babu Ram school, where the boy, identified as Mukul Sharma, had gone to learn swimming.

Mukul Sharma, a class eight student of DAV public school, was taken out of the pool by the people swimming with him.

"Around 30 minutes after jumping in the pool, Mukul drowned," said a police officer, quoting the statement of the victim's cousin Vikash.

Police said that Mukul had started taking swimming lessons from Thursday.

"He went to the pool with his cousin Vikash who was sitting outside at the time of the incident."

A resident of Farash Bazar, Mukul was the only child of his parents.

"We have registered a case of negligence against unknown people and initiated a probe to ascertain the exact reason behind the victim's death," said the police officer.
