Delhi Metro turns 21

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) celebrated its 21st foundation day on Sunday.

Urban Development Secretary and DMRC chairman Madhusudan Prasad, who was the chief guest at a function here on the occasion, presented awards to 43 employees for their outstanding contribution to the metro rail service that has transformed commuter travel in the national capital region.

"Delhi Metro has changed the course of public transport in India. DMRC has maintained the reliability and punctuality of Metro services. The punctuality of the trains during 2014-15 remained 99.88 percent," he said in his address at the function at the Manekshaw Centre in Delhi cantt.

 

To commemorate the occasion, a photo exhibition on the activities of the Delhi Metro was organised.

In his address, DMRC managing director Mangu Singh said: "The scale of activity in the present phase of metro construction in the National Capital Region(NCR) has been enormous."

"On the operational front, additional statistics are now being taken not only for peak hour traffic but peak of peak hour traffic owing to the ever increasing ridership. Also, additional efforts are being made to stress on the indigenization of the technologies involved in Metro operations in sync with the 'Make in India' campaign of the government of India," he said.

On the occasion, the Central Secretariat metro station was declared the "best metro station".

A statement from the DMRC said that Mahesh Kumar received the metro person of the year award while Renu Dhillon was awarded the metro woman of the year award.

Popular music composer and singer Anand Raj Anand enthralled the audience with a cultural programme.
