Delhi government's ambitious 'reading mela' campaign to ensure that every school student from classes VI to VIII is able to read concluded on Sunday with ceremonies at several places across the national capital.

"Thousands of children, accompanied by their parents joined the celebration... children demonstrated their enhanced reading skills with their parents in the audience," an official statement here said.

Over 1,000 reading melas were held every Sunday over the last four months in Delhi government-run schools by School Management Committees (SMCs) to ensure that every child could read.

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, on the occasion, said the initiative was a "remarkable example" of what a partnership between the government and communities could achieve.

"The vision of the Education Department was implemented by the parents of children studying in government schools through SMCs, with the support of the department. I am elated by the scale of success achieved by reading melas," he said.

The objective of the reading campaign, launched on Teacher's Day (September 5), was to ensure that every student from classes VI to VIII was able to read.
