Expressing concern over the overcrowded Tihar Jail, which houses inmates twice its capacity, Delhi Chief Secretary D.M. Spolia Sunday said three more jails will come up in the capital.

Spolia, who was on a visit to review the progress of under-construction Mandoli Jail, said the government planned to open jails in Baprola and Narela.

He asked the Public Works Department to expedite the construction work of Mandoli Jail so that it could start functioning as early as possible.

Director General (Jail) Alok Verma told Spolia that the jail would be commissioned by December this year and permission for creation of 747 posts for the prison's administrative work had been taken up with the concerned authority.

Tihar is the largest prison in South Asia region and has around 12,000 inmates against its capacity of 6,000 prisoners across it nine jail complexes.
