Seeking freedom from the "tyranny of arrogance", a section of intellectuals here on Friday submitted a memorandum to RBI's regional director in protest against demonetisation.

"Nobel laureates from the country and abroad have cautioned the government of India time and again. Creator of this preposterously inane situation is completely indifferent. He is still arrogant, dictatorial and autocratic," said a statement quoting more than 30 writers and professors from West Bengal, including poet Subodh Sarkar and Sahitya Akademi awardee Nrisingha Prasad Bhaduri.

"We express our deep anguish and disappointment at the policy of demonetisation as adopted by the government. We seek to demand an economic situation whereby the poor and the sufferers return to their normal life. Let humanity get freedom from the tyranny of arrogance, dictatorship and misrule."

The intellectuals noted that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had "steadfastly" stood beside the sufferers and "ceaselessly" protested against the move.
