A three-day meet of top police officers of the country began here on Friday with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh stating that demonetisation of high value currency notes will impair the finances of anti-national elements and groups.

Inaugurating the 51st annual conference of top police officials at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, he commended the efforts of the police forces of the states, union territories and centre for all round improvement in the internal security situation in the country.

He noted that the forces were effectively tackling the problems, be it insurgency in the North-East, Maoist activities, or the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, where "attempts to incite secession and law and order problems were made from our neighbourhood".

He also lauded the coordinated efforts of Central and State intelligence for not letting ISIS indoctrinated youth in committing any act of terror in the country.

Rajnath Singh emphasised on the need of exchange of information relating to best practices among police personnel belonging to all States and Central agencies.

He also desired that contribution of experts of various security domains, such as investigation, forensic science and prosecution, need to be appropriately recognised.

The Home Minister gave away the Indian police medals for meritorious service to officers of Intelligence Bureau and Ministry of Home Affairs.

Ministers of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju and Hansraj Gangaram Ahir, Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi, Director of National Police Academy Aruna M Bahuguna, heads of central paramilitary forces, Directors General of Police (DGPs) and Inspectors General of Police (IGPs) of all the states and senior officers from security and intelligence agencies are attending the conference.

The conference would deliberate on various security-related issues confronting the nation, and to come out with ways and means to tackle them.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived here Friday evening, will address the meet on Saturday.

Both the Prime Minister and the Home Minister will interact with police officials and have lunch with them.

This is the 51st meet of DGPs and IGPs and the third outside Delhi.

The idea of holding the meeting of DGPs and IGPs outside Delhi was mooted by Modi after he became the Prime Minister in 2014.

It was held in Guwahati in 2014 and in Bhuj in Gujarat in 2015.
