ADO Den Haag on Wednesday appointed Fons Groenendijk as new head coach for the remainder of the 2016/2017 Eredivisie football season. Groenendijk succeeds Zeljko Petrovic, who was fired on Tuesday after a series of bad results.
The 52-year-old Groenendijk signed a deal until the end of the season with an option for two more years, reports Xinhua.
Last season Groenendijk kept Excelsior in the Eredivisie and the aim of his new club is to do the same with Den Haag. He also coached Willem II and FC Den Bosch and as a player he was, among other clubs, active for Den Haag, at that time called FC Den Haag, from 1982 until 1987.
After a good start with 10 points from the first four matches, Den Haag only collected seven points from the last 17 matches under Petrovic.
The club from The Hague dropped to the current 16th position in the Eredivisie, which would mean playing relegation play-offs by the end of the season.
Petrovic started last summer as successor of Henk Fraser, who left for Vitesse. He is the first coach fired in the 2016/2017 Eredivisie season.
