Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh is emerging as a possible choice of the Congress to take on BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi from Varanasi, a party leader said Tuesday

The leader, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that the former Madhya Pradesh chief minister had "stature" and the factor would work in his favour.

"He is a heavyweight leader and has the right profile to fight against Modi," said the leader. The names of local Congress leaders including Ajai Rai and Rajesh Mishra were also in contention, he added.

Modi was a national leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party and it would be better to field someone with stature against him, said the leader and the name of senior Congress leader Karan Singh was also doing the rounds.

"The most important thing is that there should be no division of anti-Modi vote. It will require understanding between four or five parties to make sure that the anti-Modi vote is consolidated," he said.

Digvijaya Singh had earlier expressed his desire to take on Modi from Varanasi. He has served as the general secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh earlier.

Apart from Varanasi, Modi is also contesting from Vadodra in Gujarat.
