Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav Thursday warned the central government not to be soft on acts of aggression by Pakistan.

Addressing party leaders and workers here after hoisting the tricolour, Yadav said he had asked the government to bring out a motion in parliament condemning Pakistan for killing five Indian soldiers in Kashmir.

But the government did not pay heed, he complained.

"It was only when Pakistan passed a motion that the government woke up and acted," he said.

The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister urged party workers to work for the country.

Referring to economic disparities in India, Yadav said only a handful led a luxurious life while more than five lakh farmers have committed suicide.

"Time has come when we will have to think of ways to bridge the yawning gap between the poor and the rich," he said.
