The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has banned the chopping of mango trees in Uttar Pradesh.

Chief Justice Dhananjay Yashwant Chandrachur and Justice Devendra Kumar Arora Friday directed the government to ensure that no mango tree was felled without permission.

The court gave the direction while hearing a public interest litigation filed by lawyer Jayant Singh Tomar.

Tomar told the court that green and fruit laden mango trees were regularly cut by government agencies while expanding roads.

Some private developers and individuals were also involved in the destruction on the outskirts of Lucknow, he said.
