Environment-conscious citizens and some hotels switched off non-essential lights to observe Earth Hour on Saturday even as the majority stayed glued to television sets for the high-profile India-Pakistan World Twenty 20 match.

The Astor Hotel powered down for an hour from 8.30 p.m. while some citizens lit clay lamps.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who sang the national anthem ahead of the match, also advocated switching off lights.

"It's Earth Hour today and if match is on, nobody cares!," posted a cricket fan on Twitter.

Fans also organised 'match pools' where many got together to catch the action on one screen in a bid to save energy.
