Egypt's ministry of antiquities has retrieved a relief that was stolen from the wall of the 13th dynasty king Sobekhotep's tomb in Luxor and illegally smuggled out of the country last century.

The German cultural centre in Cairo said in a statement Wednesday that the Egyptian embassy in Berlin got the artifact several days ago, state-run MENA news agency reported.

It was handed over to the ministry Tuesday to be niched at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

The relief is 30 cm tall and 40 cm wide and depicts three rows of offering holders walking forward.

It had been spotted by curators at Bonn University Museum during preparations for a temporary exhibition to be held there.
