Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the culmination of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, will be celebrated Tuesday, the Shahi Imam of Fatehpuri mosque announced Monday.

"The moon was sighted at various places in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar before 7 p.m. today (Monday). So, Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated Tuesday," Shahi Imam Mufti Mohammed Mukarram Ahmed told IANS.

He said the moon was not seen in Delhi because of rain.

Delhi Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung extended his warm greetings to the people of the national capital on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.

"This festival strengthens our faith in oneness, compassion and tolerance and instils a sense of camaraderie and goodwill towards all," Jung said in a message.

"May the almighty grant his choicest blessings to all the citizens of our great nation," he said.
