The youngest son of former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych drowned on Saturday after his vehicle broke through the ice over Lake Baikal in Russia, media reported on Monday.

"Viktor Viktorovich Yanukovych has died under tragic circumstances. He died as he lived - at the wheel of a car," Efe news agency reported citing the press service for Nestor Shufrych, a member of the Opposition Bloc parliamentary faction and close family friend.

The deceased, 33, was a deputy of the Ukrainian Parliament for two legislatures, and was passionate about motorsports.

Viktor Viktorovuch had been the vice president of the Automobile Federation of Ukraine since 2012, until the overthrow of his father in February 2014.

The Ukrainian foreign affairs ministry has asked Moscow to officially confirm the death of Yanukovych's son who, like his father, was seeking refuge in Russia.
