Excessive force used by six people to restrain an Indian-origin man in the Australian state of Queensland contributed to his death in 2012, according to the findings of an inquest, a media report said on Wednesday.
Amit Kumar, 34, died from breathing complications in 2012 after five men and one woman used zip ties to restrain him in a car park near the Mooloolaba foreshore on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, ABC News reported.
Queensland coroner John Hutton on Wednesday said that although the three-day inquest found the group's actions contributed to Kumar's death, he was unable to quantify the "level of contribution" of their action.
He added that those restraining Kumar failed to release pressure on him despite his urgent pleas that he could not breathe.
Kumar was planning to go on a boat trip with Offshore Reef and Game Fishing, but assaulted a staff member from the charter company after a heated argument.
A group of staff members and customers then restrained Kumar face-down on the ground. While waiting for the police, they used zip-ties to restrain him. Soon Kumar lost consciousness and could not be revived.
The coroner has not requested any criminal charges to be laid against the group.
