In a startling revelation Russian tennis ace Maria Sharapova on Monday said she failed a drug test at the Australian Open.

According to media reports, Sharapova received a letter from the International Tennis Foundation several days ago informing her that she had failed the test for a substance that had been legal until January 1, 2016.

The former Wimbledon champion told a press conference that the substance she had been taking throughout her career only appeared on WADA's banned list this year.

Earlier, Sharapova called an unscheduled press conference for Monday to make what her agent called a "major announcement".

The former Wimbledon champion, 28, has been troubled by a number of injuries in recent years, leading to speculation that she was set to hang up her racket or take a break from the sport, mirror.co.uk reported.
