An ethics committee on Friday cleared world football governing body FIFA's president Gianni Infantino of all wrongdoing following an extensive investigation into corruption allegations.

Infantino had been scrutinised by FIFA's ethics committee following allegations of expense mishandling and improper professional conduct, reports Efe.

"The benefits enjoyed by Mr Infantino were not considered improper," the committee said, adding that any problems that had arisen under Infantino's charge were related to "internal compliance issues" rather than an ethical matter.

Infantino took over as FIFA's president after Joseph "Sepp" Blatter, who had held the post for eight years, resigned in February 2016 amid a high-profile corruption scandal.

Infantino thanked those involved in the investigations and added that he would now like to focus on his efforts to improve FIFA.
