Union Minister of State for Social Justice Ramdas Athawale on Saturday directed various central PSUs and state government bodies to fill up vacancies for disabled on priority.
There are 405 such vacancies in Air India, 113 in Indian Railways, one in Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, besides a whopping 2,573 in the Maharashtra government, 1,750 in the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation and 122 in Thane Municipal Corporation.
Taking serious note of the vacancies, he directed the central and state bodies to take stock and warned of stringent action if the backlog was not cleared.
Athawale addressed a meeting of senior officials of the concerned bodies when he informed that the reservation of jobs for disabled has been increased by 25 percent - from 3 to 4 percent now.
Additionally, the central government has sanctioned a budget of Rs 762.85 crore to be given as aid to disabled in the current fiscal (2017-2018), he said.
