The Congress said on Wednesday that the Narendra Modi government should find a way to balance the concerns over pollution with the festive expectations of people in the wake of Supreme Court banning sale of firecrackers in Delhi and NCR during Diwali.
"Pollution is a very big problem for the country and in same way religious expectations should not be affected. There is need for coordination by the government so that people are able to enjoy the festivals in a way that pollution does not increase," Congress spokesperson R.P.N. Singh told reporters here.
The Supreme Court on Monday ruled that there will be no sale of firecrackers in Delhi and National Capital Region during Diwali, as it restored a November 2016 order banning the sale and stocking of firecrackers there. Traders with temporary licenses on Wednesday moved the Supreme Court seeking relaxation of the ban.
