A fire broke out Friday in a special train carrying paramilitary forces bound for Jammu and Kashmir to be deployed for the assembly elections beginning Nov 25.

The blaze occurred between the New Jalpaiguri (NJP) and Ambari railway stations in northern West Bengal Friday evening.

There were no reports of any casualty, police said.

Fumes were noticed from the general compartment minutes after the train, carrying at least a thousand paramilitary personnel, left Ambari station.

Railway police, fire brigade and railway officials rushed to the spot.

Train movement between NJP and Assam was halted following the fire, said Kokil Roy, inspector-in-charge of New Jalpaiguri railway police. Train services resumed at night.

The fire brigade suspects that the personnel were cooking in the general compartment which led to the fire.
