The construction firm that was building the now collapsed Kolkata flyover on Friday denied it had used substandard material in it. The flyover crash has claimed 24 lives.

"The work started after the approval of the construction material," a spokeswoman of the now blacklisted IVRCL told reporters here.

The Hyderabad-based company was constructing the Kolkata flyover in the congested Posta area in Kolkata. A portion of the bridge came down on Thursday, trapping scores of vehicles, killing at least 24 and leaving over 70 injured.

The firm said it still did not know what caused the disaster and "it's for the investigative team to decide".

"The incident has shocked us and we are ourselves anxious to know the reason behind the collapse," the spokeswoman said.

"The investigation takes time. We don't have any information so far. We are there to cooperate in the investigation," the spokeswoman said.
