Five people, including two women, were killed and two critically injured on Saturday when their SUV rammed into a stationary dumper truck park on the national highway, police said.

All the deceased were in their early 20s and were heading towards Sonipat in the SUV from Karnal. The accident occurred on the busy National Highway (NH-I) near Karnal, leaving the SUV destroyed.

One of the victims, Sonali, was heading for Sonipat early Saturday as her father had died on Friday night following an ailment. She was accompanied by other friends on a bus.

At Karnal, their friends Aman and Yatin, offered to take them to Sonipat on the SUV. The vehicle had barely gone a few kilometres when the accident happened.

Five victims of the accident died on the spot while two were admitted to a private hospital in Karnal in a critical condition, the police added.

Those killed included Sonali and her friend Sanjana (both from Sonipat), Neha from Himachal Pradesh, Aman and Yatin (both from Ghanaur in Haryana).

Families of the victims have demanded action against the highway construction company for not putting up signages for diversion which allegedly led to the accident.
