At least five people were killed and more than 14 others wounded Saturday in a suicide truck bombing attack targeting Iraqi police in southern Baghdad, Iraq's capital, an interior ministry source said.
The attack occurred late in the afternoon when a suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden truck into a crowded police checkpoint at the southern entrance of Baghdad in Doura district, the source told Xinhua.
The death toll could rise as ambulances and police vehicles continued to evacuate the casualties to hospitals, the source said.
Iraq has been witnessing some of the worst violence in years. Terrorism and violence have killed 5,576 civilians in Iraq in the first half of this year, with 11,666 wounded, according to a recent UN report.
