At least five civilians were killed and 10 others injured during renewed shelling on the outskirts of the port city of Mariupol in eastern Ukraine, authorities said Tuesday.
The incident occurred at around 3 p.m. local time (12 p.m. GMT), when several shells exploded in Sartana village, causing casualties among people attending a funeral ceremony, Xinhua reported citing the Mariupol city council.
Mariupol Mayor Yuri Hotlubey accused independence-seeking insurgents of being responsible for the incident and said he will appeal to the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe on the alleged ceasefire violations by the rebels.
There was no immediate reaction from the insurgents.
Mariupol, a strategic port city on the Azov Sea controlled by the government forces, had been under fierce insurgent attacks before Ukraine's government and rebel leadership inked a ceasefire on Sep 5.
