Johannesburg, Nov 20 (IANS/EFE) Five people were killed Thursday in a shootout between drivers of for-hire mini buses in Johannesburg, a public transportation sector that has witnessed frequent clashes between rival associations of drivers.
Four people, apparently drivers, were killed in the shootout, while the fifth died after being run over as he tried to escape, according to reports carried by the South African Press Association (SAPA).
The violence broke out during a dispute over routes in the area of the East Rand, east of Johannesburg. Three people with possible connections to the incident were detained by the police, the reports said.
Incidents of shootouts occur frequently between bus owners in the cities of South Africa, one of the countries with the highest rates of violent crime, in which 47 people die by acts of violence every day.
