Five members of a family were feared drowned in the Bhakra canal near Anandpur Sahib in Punjab, police said on Saturday.

Police said that the pick-up vehicle in which the family was travelling is believed to have fallen into the canal near Jhijri village, about 90 km from here.

The family, comprising a couple and their three minor children, had left their village in neighbouring Himachal Pradesh on Thursday.

The police was informed after they did not reach their destination and could not be contacted on their mobile number.

The police started a search operation on the possible route taken by their vehicle and found signs of an accident near the canal. Divers have been deployed to find the vehicle.

Those feared drowned include Rajpal, 33, his wife Charno Devi, 28, and their three children aged eight, four and three months.
