Five pilgrims were killed on Sunday when a huge tree fell on their moving vehicle near Karnataka's Madikeri town, police said.
"The pilgrims were returning after visiting Kukke Subramanya temple near Sullia in Dakshina Kannada district, when the incident occurred," police said in a statement from Madikeri in Kodagu district. Madikeri is about 270 km from Bengaluru.
With monsoon remaining intense across the state, moderate to heavy rains were reported from coastal, Malnad region and south and north interior areas on Sunday.
According to the regional met office, south-west monsoon has been vigorous over south interior areas and active over coastal region.
The Met department forecast rain and thundershowers at most places over coastal and interior areas and at a few places over north interior parts on Monday.
Bengaluru city is likely to experience a generally cloudy sky with a spell or two of rain on Monday. Strong gusty winds are likely to sweep the city at times, officials from the Met department said.
The maximum temperature is likely to be around 28 degrees Celsius while the minimum temperature is expected to be around 20 degrees Celsius.
