Egypt's former football star Mohamed Aboutrika has been added to a terror list for his alleged links with the banned Muslim Brotherhood group, according to his lawyer.

"We will appeal this decision," Osman, Aboutrika's lawyer, was quoted by the BBC on Wednesday.

Osman said the move was "contrary to the law", adding that his client had "not been convicted or formally notified of any of the charges against him".

Aboutrika is alleged to be monetarily helping the Brotherhood, which Egypt deems a terrorist outfit.

In 2012, the 2008 BBC African Footballer of the Year endorsed the successful presidential bid by Mohamed Morsi, a Brotherhood member.

Aboutrika is now subject to a travel ban and his passport and assets may be frozen.
