Former New Zealand cricket captain Stephen Fleming will take part in a theatrical show at the opening ceremony for the World Cup.

The ceremony will also witness musical, theatrical and cultural performances from some of New Zealand's most famous entertainers.

Fleming will be taking the stage with popular local artists to tell the story of a young cricketer who dreams of making it big.

"It's looking pretty impressive," he was quoted as saying by nzherald.co.nz Sunday.

"Now I've just got to make sure I get my lines right."

The event would end with a dazzling fireworks display in Christchurch.

The show Thursday will be followed two days later by the tournament's first game between New Zealand and Sri Lanka Saturday at the Hagley Oval ground.
