At least four people were feared drowned in the Yamuna river where they had gone for a dip while on a visit to Vridavan on the occasion of Sri Krishan Janmashtami, police said on Sunday adding that another from among the group was rescued.
Police divers continued the search for the missing victims till late on Sunday evening but failed to trace them.
Police said the five, aged 17 to 22, belonged to Uttar Pradesh's Badaun district.
"The four are still missing," said Piyush Kumar, circle officer, Maant area, adding that the lone survivor, Rohit, has been hospitalised in a critical state.
Residents said the five had come to the temple town for Janmashtami celebrations. In the morning, they decided to swim and take a bath in the river near Keshi Ghat.
"They perhaps had no idea how deep the seemingly shallow water was. Quicksand and whirlpools often cause problems for unsuspecting swimmers," Gopi Nath, a priest at Yamuna's Keshi Ghat, said.
