The German cabinet Wednesday agreed to send German soldiers to Iraq to train Kurdish fighters battling the Islamic State (IS) Sunni radical group.

A government statement said Germany has decided to offer the support at the request of the Iraqi government, and it is part of the international efforts to fight the IS.

Germany plans to send up to 100 soldiers from the German Armed Forces for the training mission in northern Iraq, Xinhua reported citing the statement.

They will provide advice and training to Iraqi armed forces, and coordinate deliveries of humanitarian aid as well as military equipment to the region.

The mission will be on until Jan 31, 2016. A mandate for the deployment is yet to be approved by the Bundestag, the lower house of the German parliament.
