Borussia Dortmund have said that their German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan will miss the Euro 2016 football championship because of a dislocated kneecap.
Gundogan's injury occurred on Tuesday during training with his club Dortmund, but Dortmund did not reveal the precise diagnosis until Friday, reports Efe.
Gundogan, regular starter in Dortmund and Germany, had also missed the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil for a back injury.
"I'm very sad about not being able to take part in the German cup final and the UEFA EURO 2016 in France either," the 25-year-old, who has been linked with various top clubs during the summer's transfer window, wrote on Facebook.
"But to feel sorry for oneself has never been the best solution. After the first shock about the diagnosis it only helps to look forward in a positive way to get fit as soon as possible again."
Germany chief coach Joachim Loew lamented the injury of the player, stating that he will not play in the Euro.
