Miniature giraffes in wood, carved African elephants and colourful masks give a glimpse of what African culture has to offer through exhibits at the African festival, Afro, at a mall in Saket, south Delhi.
Anjali Jain, curator of the festival, said her eyes opened to the beauty and vibrancy of Africa and the Maasai tribe, especially, during a visit to Kenya.
Hand-picking paintings and wooden carvings, Jain brought these works of craftsmanship to India, and hopes to offer the people of Delhi a glimpse of African art through this exhibition.
"We know about European and Oriental art, but I feel we in India are still alien to African art and culture. My visit to Kenya was an eye-opener, I discovered colourful, vibrant, happy African art," Jain told IANS.
"These people have created an extraordinary cultural heritage that is deeply embedded in a beautiful yet fragile physical environment," she said.
The exhibition, on till July 7, is open to all.
