The Ghaziabad Bar Association Saturday announced it was suspending its agitation for 15 days in view of the prevailing model code of conduct, while giving this time to police to withdraw the criminal case registered against 200 unidentified lawyers.

The decision was taken through a resolution passed by the general body of the association.

The meeting also passed a resolution to send a letter to the district police chief in which the bar president apprised him that six police constables not only roughed up senior lawyer and former bar association secretary Shashi Tyagi but also robbed him of his mobile phone April 13. It said the phone was finally returned to the victim after several efforts made by Sub Inspector Pankaj Chaudhary.

Four of the constables were named, while the latter said that the remaining two could be identified in an identification parade.

In the letter to the SSP, the bar association urged to expunge the criminal case registered under various sections against about 200 lawyers of the Ghaziabad bar.

"If the case is not expunged within this period, an agitation against the SSP (Shachi Ghildiyal) would be launched on a massive scale. Her transfer would be sought immediately after the expiry of the model code of conduct," said bar association president Anil Pandit.
