A 16-year-old girl was killed when a speeding car driven by her teenaged male friend rammed into a tree, police said on Friday.

The boy also received critical injuries and is being treated at Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre.

"Both the teenaged occupants study in the same school, and were neighbours staying in Air India Colony" said a police official.

Police sources said the boy was returning home along with the girl in his Maruti Zen car.

"The boy lost control over the car near Vasant Vihar's D Block resulting in a crash into a roadside tree. The impact was so strong that the left hand side of the car was totally shattered in the incident," said a senior police official.

Police rushed both of them to the trauma centre where the girl was declared brought dead.

Police have registered a case of rash and negligent driving and investigations are on to find out how the teenaged boy took the car from his home and was driving it.

The minimum legal age for driving in India is 18 years.
