A one-day session of the Goa legislative assembly was called to fulfill the constitutional requirement of meeting within six months, Governor Mridula Sinha said on Tuesday.

"I wish to inform you that the session has been summoned to comply with the constitutional mandate under Article 174(1), which provides that six months shall not intervene between two consecutive sessions of the assembly of a state," Sinha said while addressing the assembly.

"The sitting of the last session was held on August 31, 2016, and, therefore, by meeting today (Tuesday), the constitutional limit of six months has been complied with."

The Governor also congratulated the people of Goa for "enthusiastically participating" in the February 4 state assembly elections ensuring a record 83 per cent turnout.
