A black and white scene from Satyajit Ray's iconic 1955 film "Pather Panchali" featured as the Google doodle Thursday as a tribute to the master craftsman on his 92nd birth anniversary.

Writer, poet, illustrator, director, lyricist and composer - Ray wore several hats, and won a lot of national and international acclaim. "Pather Panchali" was his first film, after which he went on to make over 30 films, winning several awards. He died in 1992.

To honour his memory and recognise his contribution, Google India has a special doodle as well as a 'Knowledge Graph' honouring the legend.

"Our humble tribute captures a scene from his film 'Pather Pachali'. Visitors on the Google India homepage will be greeted with a rich tapestry of information about Satyajit Ray's life, popular movies, news, and his images," Sandeep Menon, director (Marketing), Google India, said in a statement.

"This is our gesture to say thank you to someone who put soul into his movies, and stirred the minds of many readers through his imminent fiction writings across the world," added Menon.

His film "Ashani Sanket" won Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1973.

Now, Ray's global popularity is depicted through the Google search trends, which highlight that not only Indians, but people across countries like Britain, US, Canada and France are also searching for queries related to 'Satyajit Ray'.

They search for terms like 'Satyajit Ray Movies' and 'Satyajit Ray Institute'.

The other top searched queries are his books and the widely loved fictional character Feluda.
