The Congress Friday said the government should reconsider its position on having a leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, as the Supreme Court questioned the Narendra Modi government on the issue.
"The presence of a leader of opposition is an essential part of democracy... The Supreme Court has taken an important step, government should reconsider its stand and ask the Lok Sabha speaker to relook into it," Congress leader Manish Tewari said.
"It seems this government does not want an opposition," he said.
The Supreme Court Friday asked the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance government to explain why there is no leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, following a petition.
