The government on Wednesday said it was taking steps to prevent the tilting of Qutub Minar by "water tightening" the base of the historical monumemt here.

According to the Survey of India, "The mean rate of annual change in tilt is 3.5 seconds per year with respect to its base centre."

"To further prevent this negligible tilt, the entire base of Qutb Minar was water tightened to ensure that water does not percolate into the foundation of the monument," Minister of Culture and Tourism Mahesh Sharma said in a reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha.

Qutb Minar is a 73-metre high tower of victory, built in 1193 by Qutab-ud-din. It is the tallest brick minaret in the world.
