The government will work to ensure that national broadcasters All India Radio and Doordarshan get larger audiences, specially in the border areas, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said Monday.

Interacting with women journalists at the Indian Women's Press Corps (IWPC), Javadekar said the government is focusing on ensuring reach of the national broadcaster as well as improving quality.

"It is a matter of concern that in the border areas, people get to see the propaganda of foreign countries, but the national broadcaster is missing. There are technical issues as well... All India Radio (AIR) has good reach on A.M. band but now it is not even heard in 5 km radius. We are looking into it," Javadekar said.

He said review of Prasar Bharati, AIR, and Doordarshan is going on.

"We want Doordarshan to become the first choice of viewers... Today, even though 12 channels of Doordarshan are mandatory to be shown on all cable networks, the viewer has the remote. We need to improve the content," he said.
