Brazilian football club Gremio closed the gap on leaders Corinthians with a 3-1 away victory over Vitoria in Brazil's Serie A championship in Salvador.

Fernandinho, Arthur and Ramiro were all on target for the visitors at the Barradao stadium on Wednesday while midfielder David was on the scoresheet for the hosts, reports Xinhua news agency.

It was Gremio's 10th win from 15 matches and left them just six points behind Corinthians, who could only manage a 0-0 draw at Avai.

Elsewhere, Santos rose to third after a second-half strike from Argentinian midfielder Emiliano Vecchio gave them a 1-0 win over Chapecoense.

In Rio de Janeiro, Paolo Guerrero's fourth league goal of the season was not enough to hand Flamengo victory over Palmeiras as the Sao Paulo outfit mustered a 2-2 draw at Estadio Luso Brasileiro.

In other matches on Wednesday, Bahia won 2-0 at Atletico Mineiro, Ponte Preta routed Coritiba 4-0 and Sao Paulo overcame Vasco da Gama 1-0.
